Scacciadiavoli
Perugia, Italy
Over the last 135 years generations of winemakers have poured energy and passion into this land making a lasting mark on the territory. Montefalco and Sagrantino are now part of the DNA of Scacciadiavoli and the Pambuffetti family. It is a reality that began with Amilcare Pambuffetti and is now being carried on by the family’s fourth generation.
Founded in 1884, the Scacciadiavoli (from scacciare – to banish, and diavoli – devils) winery takes its name from an exorcist that lived in a town at the borders of the property who used the wine for his rituals.
It was conceived by Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi as a wine “industry”: an imposing oenological complex, highly advanced for its age. In 1954 Amilcare Pambuffetti, at 71, bought the Scacciadiavoli holding, where at the age of 14 he had worked as a farm hand.Upon his death in 1977 his sons Alfio, Settimio and Mario continued the activities that had begun with their father. In the year 2000 the Pambuffetti brothers (Francesco, Carlo, and Amilcare), the children of Settimio, in the name of an ancient tradition, decided to take the winery into their own hands – the oldest of its kind in the area.
Scacciadiavoli Wines
Scacciadiavoli Sagrantino Montefalco
Montefalco Sagrantino will surprise you with so many diverse aromas and a structure of such great importance. The color is profound, the bouquet sensual, and the mouthfeel and flavors are enveloping and persistent. The elegance of the wine can already be appreciated when it is young: a well balanced cornucopia of fruit and spice aromas meld with the wood, and the Sagrantino is enhanced. But only after some years you can appreciate it fully, when it releases aromas of balsam, and the tannins soften, revealing a wine of great personality. Sagrantino is rich in polyphenol which are very powerful antioxidants.
Scacciadiavoli Grechetto
Grechetto is an indigenous Umbrian varietal. We make it in a single variety vinification to produce a dry white wine that presents a range of lively aromas, both in the bouquet and in the mouth. Sweet fruit, white and yellow flowers and a fresh acidity keep the wine alive and persistent. At the right temperature it is the perfect accompaniment during hot summer days, as well as all year long with soups and pastas, or light main courses.
Scacciadiavoli Montefalco Rosso
Scacciadiavoli’s Montefalco Rosso boasts an intense red ruby color, an expansive, elegant bouquet with scents of cherry, and a soft and voluptuous flavor. According to the ancient wine making tradition of the Montefalco area, after selecting the grapes for the production of the Montefalco Sagrantino, all the other varietals of red grapes were harvested for the production of a fresher wine, to accompany all type of dishes. Montefalco Rosso lends itself well to aging for years. The presence of sediments in the bottom of the bottle is natural.
